Altar for Yumiko 2012
SomArts in SF This shrine is a tribute to my mother, Yumiko Fujii. She died young at the age of forty-eight. She suffered from severe depression towards the end of her life and my family was immobilizing in helping her. After she died, I felt hurt and angry for many years because she died too young. In 2006, I began to make around my mother to help me to heal from her death. This process ultimately brought out emotions of understanding and loving kindness. Calling in her spirit, her essence returns to this intimate and temporal setting, which reinforces my mother's absence and presence in my life. It is a place where memories, love, and compassion live. |
